Meet Olin
Olin Parker is a graduate of public schools, a former math teacher and teacher of the year. As a lifelong educator and parent to three children who attend public school in New Orleans, he understands that a strong education can change the life of a child, a family, and a city.
For the past four years, Olin has served as a member and two-term President of the Orleans Parish School Board. During his tenure on the Board, he’s helped to significantly expand access to mental health services, pass four consecutive balanced budgets, support the teachers and students of New Orleans to surpass pre-pandemic achievement levels - all while increasing resources for student well-being, tackling gun violence, and making new investments in facilities and the arts.
Olin has dedicated his entire career to education--first in the classroom and then at the Louisiana Department of Education, where he led charter school accountability across the state. His work at the LDOE helped ensure that schools are safe, academically rigorous, and serve all students.
Through his expertise in school governance, practical classroom experience in both charter and traditional public schools, and as the President of the Orleans Parish School Board for two terms, Olin has a deep understanding of the many opportunities ahead for New Orleans Public Schools. Olin’s deep connections to education will help produce the solutions needed to ensure our schools accelerate toward excellence.
Parent
Olin’s inspirations for running for School Board are his three children, all of whom have attended New Orleans Public Schools since kindergarten. He believes it's important that New Orleanians have public school parents elected to serve on the school board.
“I understand the issues facing public school parents in New Orleans because I live them every day. Families that struggle to balance multiple school schedules, excessively long bus rides, and everything else that comes with our city’s decentralized school system deserve an advocate on the board.
I have been that advocate for four years and I intend to continue putting students and families first after I am re-elected.”
Educator
Olin has dedicated his entire career to education—first in the classroom, and for the last four years in the Board room. This combination of school-based experience and big picture perspective means Olin has the experience necessary to continue serving as an effective member of the Orleans Parish School Board.
“I started my career in public education in 2007 as a certified math teacher at an alternative high school for overage students. From my very first day in the classroom until now, I have diligently worked to improve public education as a former teacher of the year, assistant football coach, chess club founder, teacher coach, and administrator at the Louisiana Department of Education.”
